Essential Tips for Beginners
Master the Basic Grip
The continental grip (like shaking hands with the paddle) is the most versatile grip for pickleball. It allows for quick transitions between forehand and backhand shots without adjusting your grip.
Learn the Two-Bounce Rule
When serving, the ball must bounce once on the receiver's side, and then once on the server's side before volleys are allowed. This is one of the most important rules for beginners to understand.
Stay Out of the Kitchen
The non-volley zone (kitchen) extends 7 feet from the net on both sides. You cannot volley the ball (hit it out of the air) while standing in this zone or touching the line. This rule prevents players from smashing the ball at the net.
Practice the Dink Shot
The dink is a soft shot that lands in the opponent's kitchen. It's one of the most important shots in pickleball, especially for beginners. Focus on control rather than power when practicing dinks.
Get to the Net
In pickleball, controlling the net is crucial. After serving or returning serve, try to advance to the non-volley zone line (but not in the kitchen) as quickly as possible.
